July 11, 2009 by Megan · 7 Comments
My friends hate me (because I am always too busy), my hiatus hernia is letting me know it hates acid reflux and my family all want to kill me. I am stressed and carrying an unhealthy load of sick husband, LONGGGGGGGGG work hours and trying to sell our house. My blood pressure is up and I am putting on weight.
Putting on weight!!!!! No way! Time to get serious. It’s funny how the little things often spur us into action. Wouldn’t you think it would be the high blood pressure that encouraged change?
A mixture of honey and cinnamon is said to be good for weight loss, reducing blood pressure, reducing cholesterol, curing acid reflux and even keeping the flu at bay! I am right into natural remedies so as of this morning I have embarked on a sweet journey of honey and cinnamon for keeping me alive.
The following list of the medicinal benefits of honey and cinnamon came to me on email…..but, there are a number of natural health sites that all maintain the same benefits.
- HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins.
- CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic Cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.
- WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one Cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.
- FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton maintains that a half Tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P..M. When the vitality of the body starts to decrease increases the vitality of the body within a week.
- ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily, morning, and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.20In a recent research Conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half a teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

Cheap, quick, easy cake recipe: Missionary Cake
March 22, 2009 by Megan · Leave a Comment
In celebration of Queensland’s first elected female Premier, Anna Bligh, a woman on a financial saving mission, I offer a cake recipe to feed the masses for next to nothing in cost and energy expenditure. This recipe was passed down to me from an amazing woman, a true leader, and in celebratory form, I pass it to you.
I grew up in Papua New Guinea and schooled at a Catholic School. Surrounded by Nuns who were always off on Missionary tours, collecting and donating food stuffs that lasted a long time without refrigeration became an expectation. Similarly, listening to the Nuns stories of hardship was supposed to make us better people!
But, those Nuns used to have the odd treat or two and this is one that I have made again and again throughout my lifetime.
Missionary Cake
- 1 cup of dried fruit
- 1 cup of sugar (I cut this by half with no adverse consequences to the mix)
- 1 cup of cold tea (or use a teabag but the flavour from a pot of black tea is divine)
- 2 cups of flour (I use Self Raising flour but those Nuns used whatever they had)
- Plonk the fruit and sugar in a large bowl. Add the cup of cold left over tea and leave the fruit to soak for at least 2 hours (I often leave it to soak overnight and bake the cake first thing in the morning).
- Add the sifted flour to the bowl of soaked fruit, mix it up, and pour into a greased tin (easy…a three year old can do it).
- Bake in a moderate over until cooked (approximately 1 hour – I skewer check when the cake is beginning to crack on the top).
- Serve warm, sliced with butter (the Nuns didn’t have butter but…I’m not a Nun and I don’t do Lent denials either!).
Delicious, cheap, healthy and super easy. My kids all grew up on Missionary cake. A favourite variant of the boring mixed fruit or plain sultanas is apricots and coconut. YUM!
Here’s another cheap, easy and quick dessert that feeds the thousands AND is more exciting than loaves and fishes: Lump cake - Quick easy dessert for lumpy grumpy families
Child protection dessert for lumpy grumpy families

The witching hour: 6 to 8pm when everyone needs to be fed, bathed and home-worked. The witching hour: a busy parent’s nightmare and a sure time for increased grumpiness and stress (or am I just projecting my own evening grumpiness onto everyone here?)
It is during times of increased family stress that child abuse (screaming and hitting in particular) occurs. How many times have you yelled at the kids while trying to get dinner ready? How many times have you felt dreadful that you just did that and promise that you’ll never do it again. You WILL do it again unless you create a change and do things differently.
Collapsing time is something working parents have long done (washing in the middle of the night, eating on the run, doing things when others don’t do them, etc). Finding quick fixes and shortcuts to get things done is a saviour to parents around the world. I’ve found a dessert shortcut to help you out during witching hour.
In a recent blog hop I came across an idea for a dessert that I just had to try.
Lump Cake
2 x tins of fruit (I used crushed pineapple and passion fruit but next time I’ll use over ripe fresh fruit – needs to be juicy)
1 x knob of butter (I used 200g no cholesterol margerine)
1x packet of white cake mix (I used the cheapest tea cake mix I could find).
Method:
Open the tins of fruit and lump them into the bottom of a casserole dish.
Open the cake mix and lump it on top of the fruit. Spread it out and over without mixing in the fruit.
Cut the butter up into small pieces and place all over the top of the dry cake mix.
Lump it into the oven and let it cook for around an hour.
Super easy, super quick and super delicious. Super Mum
and happy kids.
This is something the kids can do and they’ll think you are the best parent in the world because you neither yelled at them or made them go without dessert, again! Mean thing you!
Did you know that stressed spelled backwards is desserts. If you stay stressed and abusive you will get your just desserts…or… change the way you do things and make the witching hour a pleasant experience.
Bugger! Which one of you childerbeast ate all my Lump cake?
