Blog on Cairns #2

Cairns, far noth Queensland, Australia. Cairns is the tourist destiniation of the sunshine state.Cairns Bloggers, welcome back to Blog On Cairns. Bloggers who have not updated their sites since last weeks Carnival are not included in this post. Many thanks to those dedicated few who have harnessed the power, marketing and reach of the blogosphere.

Andrew Griffiths: Andrew is one of the Ambassadors for ACT for Kids (the renamed Abused Child Trust). At the launch of Child Protection Week, ACT for Kids held a supporters lunch in Brisbane where Andrew was a guest speaker. Andrew says:

ACT for Kids is an organisation with one aim – to rid Australia of child abuse, in any form.

I’m right behind you Andrew. Many people in Cairns say no to child abuse. Can Cairns can it though?  Together we are making an impact and changing culture to one of zero tolerance against childhood violence.

Birdwing Therapies: Keran is hosting a Strengths Based training in Cairns on Tuesday and Wednesday this coming week. The training is FULLY booked.

The Strengths Based training with St Luke’s Innovative Resources (Bendigo, Victoria) at Imaginif in Cairns is booked out. Thank you for the fantastic response! We are all working hard to get the last details in place (we are talking catering of course!).We are looking forward to a sensational two days training with a fantastic group of local practitioners……

Cairns Blog.net: Michael Moore stands At the edge of the Cliff. In a beginning account of the Australian Federal Parliament’s introduction of a bill to remove discrimination against same-sex partners (I support this bill – stop ALL discrimination), Michael peeks into the bedroom of Cliff Richard. Cliff, sick to death of public innuendo, admits that he is in a long term live in companionship with a man – an ex Roman Catholic priest.

Cairns Unlimited: Steve and Maria are loving that Summer is back in the Tropical North. Breaking from their usual winter routine of drinking the first coffee at their computers, they threw winter out with the recycling and headed straight for the beach. Gotta love Cairns and our fantastic climate and lifestyle.

Have camera will travel: Documentary photography aims to create pictures where the people in them are acting naturally. However, when Being a fly on the wall, etiquette must be observed. Paul suggests a number of ways to both get natural looking shots and not upset people when they notice that you are snapping them. Who wants to be hit with a fly swat? Not me!

Megan is a top 100 Aussie BloggerImaginif Child Protection became Serious Business: Consider this your personal invitation to a private protest against sexual violence toward women and childrenTeddies Reclaim the Night. On Friday, October 31st (Halloween), the annual and international Reclaim the Night rally will take place on Megan’s upstairs front verandah. With huge exposure to peak hour traffic, I hope you will join us to say no to violence against women and children. Gold coin entry, byo picnic tea, teddies and candels on sale.

Knowledge Solutions: Digital text can do better and blogs increase business bottom line! There’s a FANTASTIC video clip in Luke’s Is Web 2.0 still in a phase of Proliferation and I encourage you all to watch it. Web 2.0 makes use of digital networking, easy linking and borderless business premises. WEb 2,0 is the difference between a brochure and a conversation. WEb 2.0 platforms are business and blogs are just one tool of that business. If you are not embracing all that Blogs can offer your business then you need to rethink your marketing plan. Digital does it better!

Nicky Jurd: A word from Nicky – Is that all one word? Welcome back to blogging Nicky. I missed you…or should I say, imissedyou.com.au?

nunyaa: I made a joke recently about Nunyaa, the Flying Nun from Flying Fish Point. Well bugger me dead – guess what she has posted about this week! Flying Fish Point. Reminiscing about Damper, fishing, sand flies and barra, I’m with Nunyaa, the Johnston River crocodiles scare the life out of me and keep us both on the shore!!!!

Psych Matters: Char leaves us with some words of wisdom around Problem solving

We can look at exactly the same thing and yet divide it up in many different ways. Perception decides how we structure the world around us. Edward de Bono (1996)

Teddy Tour: Used to the effects of child sexual abuse (I am a therapist), I am always moved by the powerful words of survivors. In Why did you send me to stay with him, Forgotten ponders on her changed attachment to her carer

He abused me. I know he abused you too. Why did you send me to stay with him?  These are the truths unspoken between us, this is the question I have never asked you.  These are the words that lie in the silences between words, so that when we talk, we do not talk.  So do not ask me why I am so distant.

That’s it for this week folks. There hasn’t been a great deal of blog updating but thanks to those who do keep their blogs interestingly active. Don’t forget to get your posts in for next weekends Blog On Cairns carnival. Submit here.

Please visit each other and get to know who blogs about what in Cairns. Let me know of other bloggers I can add to the Cairns list. Link to each other, link to this carnival. Linking raises indexing and increases circulation remember what Luke showed us in his video – Digital is better).

Would anyone like to host this carnival one weekend…you will be amazed at how many hits you get as people check their trackbacks and key search terms bring new visitors.

Leave me a comment to let me know what you think about having the Cairns bloggers posts highlighted in a single place. Leave a comment for your neighbour bloggers too. Just as a Fly on a wall has etiquette, so too do bloggers. Lurking and stalking without comments is not a way to make new friends and encourage repeat visits.

Blog on Cairns cos it’s the end of winter

Cairns with storms brewingWelcome to the end of winter inaugural, stand alone, Blog On Cairns. This carnival is open only to Cairns bloggers and I expect to see it grow, grow, grow up a monsoon as your family, friends and colleagues become inoculated against the threat of a life without blogging :)

Until people start submitting their own posts, posts will appear alphabetically.  And so we away….

  • Andrew Griffiths: Join Andrew over at his now redesigned blog and web spot. Colourful and bold (the blog, not Andrew), his posts reveal the international gateway that Cairns offers. Whether, home, interstate or abroad, Andrew’s post are always interesting and worth the time to read. In Stop beating yourself up when you make a mistake, Andrew places a monetary value on learning from mistakes, rather than staying in a deficit mood where we beat ourselves up. An interesting and solution oriented slant I can confidently say that I have spent a fortune on my education!
  • Balloon with Hot Air: Has not posted since December of 2007. I may as well delete them from the list?????
  • Berry Baby: I recently bought a part time package of these amazing and environmentally friendly nappies for my new grand baby (yes, I am a six week old Grandma :) ).
  • Big Little Sister: Oh no. Melody and her little family have finally provided an Answer to Melody’s many hints of the recent past. They are leaving paradise to go to the capital of the Emirates, Abu Dhabi, the richest city in the world. Melody I look forward to keeping up with your adventures through your blog.
  • Birdwing Therapies: Are the kids doing your head in? Guess what? Tantrums are normal for Toddlers. Both a colleague and a personal friend, Keran was lulled into blogging as a platform for advertising and marketing by, moi. Now a true convert, Keran blogs around the issues she deals with in therapy.
  • Cairns Blog.net: What’s your view on saving the Yacht Club building? Mike, from Cairns Blog is always one to ensure the voice of Cairns people is heard, particularly around civic issues. In Garrett wants new information to save Yachtie, Mike gives the labour politicians some of the new information they seek:
      – how about another 10,000 locals that have said they want to keep this piece of our community history where it is;
      - another highrise, that only for those who can afford a million-dollar apartment, is not welcome in Cairns;
      - that such a small parcel of land can and should be gifted to the community for the people, would be a gracious move by the Government;
      - that it is, and has been for over 100 years, a famous music and entertainment venue serving two World Wars, countless local weddings and the creation of many local musos;
      - the will of the majority of the community is to retain this building and all that it represents as we change and grow our population; The Yachtie is on the register of the National Estate, the National Trust’s list of endangered places and its Queensland register.
  • Cairns Unlimited: Do you all yet know of the Jump on – Jump off Cairns tourist bus? What a great idea. Has anyone done it yet? I aim to but just cannot seem to get a free afternoon where I can taste the new service (and of course then I will blog a review on it). Thanks for blogging this Stave and Maria. Your blog is a terrific service to Cairns and to tourism so please do keep it all up.
  • Have camera will travel: When I grow up I want to be like Paul Dymond. I read his posts and try to emulate his techniques: Paul is brilliant….I am sad :( However, I owe Paul a big thank you. In Some more blogs for the weekend, Paul high lights some of his favourite photography blogs. Guess what I’ll be doing this afternoon. It seems a waste to me that we live in Paradise and do not take the opportunity to photograph it to use on our blogs. I reckon citizen photography is a great way to marked Cairns through the blogosphere.

They have given insight into the immense human struggle to reach an individual’s top form. They have given courage and inspiration to those who witnessed that struggle against the odds. They have brought peace and co-operation between countries unheard of through diplomatic or political process. They have shown us how to win with courage… and how to lose with grace.

Ever eloquent, do yourself a favour and read Jean. Her writing is as moving as her paintings are. Jean, I reckon you should blog raffle one of your paintings as a blog traffic enticer. More people need to have the pleasure of reading you.

  • Kaj Haffenden: Kaj has not posted since the beginning of June: How to create a strong password.
  • Knowledge Solutions: It seems that Luke has been Linked Out prior to being Linked in again to active group management: Linkedin or more like Linkedout. Linked In is a social networking site for business people and corporate bloggers. A very useful tool for those seriously using Wed 2.0 applications, Luke’s frustration at some “uncollaborative” management changes resulted in being contacted and assured that:

our desire is definitely to enhance the functionality for LinkedIn Groups.

Good for you Luke. Thanks for taking up the challenge and keeping Web 2.0 fair. Luke is flirting with a blog platform change to a wordpress theme. Do it Luke: wordpress is fantastic. The options for customising your blog are endless.

  • Nicky Jurd: Nicky has not posted since June 25: Mobile Generation
  • nunyaa: The flying nun of the north. In Please Explain, Nunyaa reminds us of Pauline Hanson and lets us all know that Pauline is after a bloke. Any takers amongst you fine gents?

Shine YOUR light on 3 positives of the last time something didn’t happen as you hoped it would.

A psychologist who uses her blog to educate and assist her online students, Char always has a myriad of topics for you to consume. Perhaps we should get Andrew Griffiths and Char to do a post together. In the two posts presented via them, they are saying a similar thing.

  • Spasmodic Dysphonia: Sue has been overseas, moved house and had an exhibition in Atherton. Never home to change her internet details, Sue is promising to get back to blogging soon. She has not posted since April!
  • Suspekt: How old do I feel?! Young Jesse contacted me through Digg recently. I went to add him to my facebook account and lo and behold, there is my son’s name in his friend’s list. It seems they went to school together. If you like music and going out in Cairns, then you need to follow Jesse’s blog.
  • Teddy Tour: The virtual Teddy Tour gives victims of child abuse a world wide voice. No matter where they live, they can send in an anoynomous story tag to be photographed on a teddy before going on a tour around the blogosphere. Not only does Cairns have exceptionally high reported rates of sexual assault, we also have a lot of survivors move here because of all that Cairns offers: Solemn in Cairns. Where did my childhood go?

That’s it from Blog On Cairns for this week. Be sure to submit your posts for next weekends Carnival (the quicker you submit, the higher up the list your post will be (= more chance of additional hits and readers). Please visit each other and get to know who blogs about what in Cairns. Let me know of other bloggers I can add to the Cairns list. Link to each other, link to this carnival. Linking raises indexing and increases circulation. Similarly, consider hosting this carnival one weekend…you may well be amazed at how many hits it gets! Leaving comments is also a simple customer service tool that you can all use as a way to grow relationships with potential new readers. Imagine your trip around the blogosphere as a real life networking function: talk to people and they talk back to you. Begin by leaving a comment here and posting about Blog On Cairns.

Happy last day of winter. See you along the Esplanade walk and at Festival Cairns.

How to Attract Site Traffic to Child Protection or Sexual Abuse Blogs

Child protection and sexual abuse issues may not be matters of high priority for general blog browsers. The terms rank low as searchable key words and the existing blog sites appear to have few comments. I have long pondered the reasons for this.

Child abuse is a scary topic for many parents and others may chose not to leave comments lest they be identified as survivors or parents of abused children. Other’s may think that they have nothing worthwhile to say (you’re wrong though – everyone has something worthwhile to say).

Increasing general knowledge and creating talk around child protection and sexual abuse can be encouraged by increasing the number of visitors to our blog sites. How though??

Blog carnivals appear to assist. In the past, visits to this site increased by an average 66.66% when I submitted articles to a carnival. In addition, the page views increased threefold and it appeared that I then attracted more repeat visits.

Increased blog traffic equates to consciousness raising around issues that affect our children. It does not equate to increased comments on blogs, but then, although nice, this is not the ultimate aim for child protection blog keepers.

Child protection and sexual assault bloggers mostly want to raise consciousness and they want to decrease the numbers of abuse. They also aim to provide helpful protective hints, tips and information to interested readers.

But…if only the initiated read their blogs, how is consciousness raised? We need to reach further afield and attract new readers.

Step 1: Reading and commenting on blogs outside of our area of passion is a must to be able to balance our views with views of the greater blog community populace. When we leave comments, the curious click onto our names to see what we write about. Bingo, an instant curious audience to child protection/sexual assault issues.

Step 2: Most important is submitting to carnivals outside of your comfort zone: Different readership, different way of thinking and hopefully new discussion around your chosen area of blogging.

Over the years, I have posted my child protection articles to many carnivals, the obvious and not so obvious. Submit your appropriate blogs to these ones for some new readership:

Think outside the square to attract new visitors to your blog on child protection or sexual abuse.

Aussie Carnival Blog On Cairns

Welcome to the June 18, 2008 edition of

Carnival of Australia and Blog On Cairns.

My Carnival hosting tradition is to always begin with a post from the previous host: it is my way of saying, “Thanks for hosting and sharing in the success of the Carnival of Australia.”  Of course last fortnight it was a sister Cairns business blogger who hosted: Keran from Birdwing Therapies. This fortnight, Keran gives us, Operation Centurion. Perpetrators and Pedophiles Being Arrested. This is something right up my ally. As child protection advocates both Keran and I are very conscious of online predators and we both share ALL information with the police if needed. As Keran says, “If you have any information which may lead to an arrest contact your local Police or Crime Stoppers“.

Blog On Cairns

Carnival of AustraliaWhat’s winter like in Tropical North Queensland? Steve and Maria from Cairns Unlimited have had one day where they had to wear long sleeves and trousers. Steve keeps a wonderful tourist centric blog and he says, “Winter in Tropical North Queensland is a far cry from the season that the southern half of Australia endures at this time of year. It’s 11:00am as I write this, and my trusty Cairns Unlimited thermometer tells me it’s 27 degrees (that’s 81 degrees American) which is not a bad winter’s temperature, I reckon”. I’m with you Steve…if it drops below 25 degrees, I freeze.

Paul Dymond of Have camera Will Travel suggests that The more you edit the better you look. Correction Paul, you’ve got it around the wrong way for the majority of us amateurs – the more you professional photographers edit photographs of us, the better we look! Paul is actually referring to the blog presentation of edited photographs. In the age of digital cameras and blogs, Mum and Dad photographer have a penchant for putting all of their pics up. Paul suggests raising your own status as digital guru and only publishing your very best and edited shots. FANTASTIC shot of a Cassowary on the Daintree Road.

Mike Moore over at Cairns Blog is finally back to his regular blogging. In Drunk Driver, Mike shares a horrific picture of a drunk and sleeping driver smashing into a group of cyclists.

Introducing Luke Grange from Knowledge Solutions. Luke and his team offer all manner of Web-based information solutions and their new corporate blog focuses on Web 2.0 applications and the benefits of blogging as a business tool. On a more personal not, Luke was one of my rescuers in my near drowning experience on the Great Barrier Reef. I am eternally grateful to Luke and I encourage you to head over to his new site and giving him a little blog karma :) .

Did you know that verylongdomainnamesarefrustrating. Over at Nicky Jurd’s she urges new website builders to consider their domain names…preferably before you buy them! What does your business do? What does your domain name say about your business? Can your clients easily remember your domain name? An excellent little post Nicky.

Jean Burman, aka Billy the Kid, is a marvel. There were only three Cairns bloggers who used the power of the blogosphere to raise consciousness around the recent Childhood Hero Day. Two of those bloggers are child safety advocates and professional in the area. Jean on the other hand, deserves accolades and fanning with banana palms, because she does not make her living from child safety. Jean shares a wonderful story of being a childhood hero, with teeth and skin, in tact.

Nunyaa, our own little Flying Nun of Flying Fish Point (I don’t know if that’s where Nunyaa lives – it just fitted with the flying nun habit comment), raises some safety and control issues around the hotly debated OneSchool data base: Students on the Net.

Queensland State Government is planning on entering personal details including photos of every state school child in an online data base. Photographs, personal details, career aspirations, off-campus activities and student performance records are being collected from all 1251 state schools.

OneSchool rhetoric comes with a threat or two: it is non negotiable and students who do not supply the required information may well be refused a state education. Ummm, I just cannot see how that could ever happen.

I understand the reasons behind state education wanting such a data base but without the security needed (let along fast internet!) to protect such sensitive online information, the potential for hacking, manipulating and sharing information about minors, leaves me a little perturbed. At this stage, I am wanting to join Nunnyaa and say, “I prefer the old hard drive and paper files thanks Mr Welford.”

Andrew Griffiths wonders if Maybe it’s time to get mobile. There is no denying the massive growth in business to your door models. Andrew posits that the model will only grow and that traditionally sedentary business houses will begin to go mobile. I wonder if anyone has done research on the environmental impact of “to your door” business verses customers seeking out business at a fixed address.

Andrew asks:

Are there ways that your business could take your products or services directly to your customers? A few prime examples that I seen develop recently are:

1. Mobile battery sellers – they come to you when you get a flat battery.
2. Mobile mechanics – they come to you to work on your car.
3. Mobile dog washers – no more wet dogs in the car.
4. Mobile finance brokers – discuss your finance needs in your own home.
5. Restaurants – home delivery is becoming more popular by the day.
6. Hairdressers – many will now come to your home or office.

I have long thought Imaginif could make use of a mobile child therapy room (a mobile home/caravan sort of an affair) that visits the smaller towns around us once a week. Paul (my accountant husband) will cringe when he reads this and I know what he will say, “Stick to your business model woman and don’t plan anything else into the cash flow!”

Like sands through the hour glass, Melody (from Biglittlesister)and her family are taking beach advantage on the fine, but cold, days Cairns has experienced (have I ever mentioned that I hate winter!). In delightful artistic talent, the girls did a sand portrait of papa bear, Lyndon. Very Aussie! [Megan breaks into song] There was an old man who swallowed Australia.

Melody, the above sand artist from Big Little Sister , has a huge parent blogger following. Cairns businesses interested in marketing their family focused wares cannot do better than giving Melody a promo to review. A positive review from Melody will reach thousands of Aussie parents all heading this way for winter warmth. Ummm, what could Melody blog about – weekends away, family centric restaurants, resort wear, tours: the list and Melody’s parent influence is endless. Blog searches are fast becoming search engine in style. Indexing, easy home based seo strategies and huge visitor numbers means that blogs often come up before tradition web or information sites. If you haven’t got a blog on your website, you’ve got rocks in your head. Thank goodness you’ve got access to experienced bloggers who can parent test your product though.

Here are the other Cairns bloggers that I know off. Get to know them, encourage them, link to them and build a solid web of people in Cairns who get the enduring strength of blogging as a tool.

Business

Des Walsh ate before he wrote, A Book I Must Have for Doing Business in China over at deswalsh.com. A delightfully serious, humorous, and humble reflection of how unChinese Des may have been, he has now whet my appetite for the book as an entree to Chinese business culture as well. Des, did you know, in China they don’t call it Chinese food. Amazing! (12 year old is looking over my shoulder groaning at my jokes)

Family

GP presents Innkeeping Heloise Style posted at Innside Montana-Your Home at the Range, saying, “Innkeeping ‘Heloise” style here in the US of A. Cheers maties” What a laugh. Thanks GP, that tickled my non cleaning elbows.

PlanningQueen presents 10 Ways To Save On Your Food Bill posted at Planning with Kids, saying, “With higher food prices looking set to stay, here are some easy steps you can take to save on your food bill” Planning’s posts are always super sensible and parent practical. I wonder if not feeding the kids would ever make one of your lists PQ? My 12 year old son is in danger of not being fed because he and his friend are eating me out of my wage! I keep offering them Tripe but they don’t seem to want that! My serious money saving food tip is to put a cup of rolled oats in with mince – yummy, healthy and doubles dinner :)

The three times kewl Alison was tagged for a meme by Cairns based Melody: Six question meme. The diversity of lodgings, employment and preference always amazes me when I read personal memes. Alison has been a circus performer and now operates a menagerie and young people home. She is also an amazingly intelligent young woman who lives her life around inclusive and non discriminatory practices. A rare bird, Alison will be in Cairns late July and I intend to have a Bloggers Meet so that you can all meet Alison too (she is a regular reader of several blogs that participate in Carnival of Australia).

Food

The wonderful Jeanie presents Cannelloni Comforts! posted at Jeanie in Paradise, saying, “How to g-r-a-d-u-a-l-l-y extend your child’s eating horizon!” Jeanie, that was very clever and the pics are divine. One of my kids was a true, pie addicted, Aussie. The only food he would eat had to be wrapped in pastry and end with the work “Pie.” We wanted soft Tacos for dinner. I told Master Pie Face that they were Mexican Pies :) He loved his Mexican Pies and still eats pie bread (tortillas) to this day.

Personal Development

Belongum presents If ever there was an apprenticeship in Ironing… posted at Belongum’s Weblog. What a laugh – this single post explains the risks associated with ironing.

…when you’re ironing in a hurry, with only your undies on! Don’t let anyone fool you – for all the burn resistance cotton might have over anything resembling polyester, it still hurts like a bastard when that’s all that happens to be between your iron (on it’s ‘Linen’ setting), and any patch of skin that might reside between your belly button and where the top of your legs are! If it’s not that, it’s the steam – do I really need to explain those particular hazards in detail any further? I thought not! The ‘dangle factor’ aside folks; I’m afraid I have to tell you that ironing in your duds, isn’t necessarily a healthy thing to be doing – but ‘needs’ tend to necessitate all manners of odd behavior.

Belongum, I am an Army brat – starch and ruler bred. Nowadays though, I am an environmental safety officer (self appointed) and ironing is a high risk and environmentally black task (aka, I let my husband do my ironing. Can’t wait to witness a mishap like yours :) hehe).

Sport

R.Pettinger presents Australian World Harmony Run posted at Sri Chinmoy Centre News, saying, “On April 27th, the Australian World Harmony Run team began an epic journey around the entire coast of Australia.” Congratulations to the runners and the organisers. Social understanding is something I strive toward and I fully encourage such projects. Thanks for submitting this to the Carnival of Australia.

Travel

Map of AustraliaOur Red House presents Our Red House: Wilson’s Promontory: Landscapes posted at Our Red House. What beautiful clear pictures. It doesn’t even look cold. While I am often focused on the northernmost tip of Australia, this post comes from the southern most tip of Australia. How cool that our Carnival spans from one tip to the other. Thanks for joining us in the Carnival. We ruin fortnightly so please do come back.

Fancy a trip to Japan in a virtual origami boat? No. Then how about sending an origami boat to the the Prime Minister of Japan: Join the mass online protest against whaling in the Southern Ocean. Activism and social change is within easy reach of us all. Join The Body Shop Activist in a few virtual paper folds and help to create a sustainable future worth having grand kids for.

That concludes this edition. Any takers for hosting next fortnight? If not, the Carnival will run here at Imaginif again.

Submit your chosen blog post to the next edition of Carnival of Australia and Blog On Cairns using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page. You must be Aussie (no matter where you live in the world) or have a post about something Australian. I received a lot of spam this edition and some posts that I could not work out the Aussie connection. If you are an overseas Aussie blogger and it is not obvious on your About page, please let me know you are Australian.

Links back to the Carnival are always appreciated and act as positive marketing for our collective Carnival.
