No more Little Losers in shop windows. Jay Jays tee off for child protection.

January 19, 2008 by Megan Bayliss · 6 Comments

Mr Men and Little MissThank you to Just Group (operators of Jay Jays) who yesterday played ball and enjoyed a metaphorical high ‘tee’ [sic] with many social and child protection campaigners throughout Australia and New Zealand.

While I prefer to enjoy the full smorgasbord of goodies at high tea, Jay Jays has at least lowered the blood pressure of many serious Aussie bloggers by making moves to respect the mental health and self esteem of our young public.

In, Jay Jays responds to tee criticism, a media statement revealed that the youth focused retailer (Jay Jays) will:

* take all tee-shirts in the Little Losers’ range out of window displays in all Australian and New Zealand stores

* not restock any Little Losers’ tee-shirts that have a motif which has alcohol related messages or sexual innuendos

Umm. Small moves Sparks, small moves. While I’m not totally appeased (out of windows does not equate to out of shops), I am grateful to Just Group’s managing director for hearing both sides of the argument and acting to ameliorate the child protection concerns of many (including the Australian Childhood Foundation, Australian Women Online and Imaginif amongst others) well organised child safety professionals and citizen journalists.

Mr Men and Little MissGrass roots power can change societal trends. We have. Isn’t it just amazing at what Mr Men and Little Misses can achieve when we work together without abuse. A win/win situation for both sides here: Tee shirts are still available but the overt marketing of a dumbed down teen culture has ceased.

Thank you to every person who left comments on Imaginif’s earlier Jay Jay’s is the Little Loser. Both the pro and anti comments contributed toward an open discussion. Imaginif world peace could be achieved through talk!

  1. Well, a small step as you say. Goes to show the ‘grass roots’, as you say, does make a difference – more than what some might believe!

  2. Tamara says:

I am glad they are doing something. I still cant not believe they ever thought it was a good idea to have them in the first place.

  3. As you said Megan, it is a win/win situation here. I’m pleased the outcome because it sends a message to ALL clothing retailers that this sort of thing will not be tolerated in Australia and New Zealand.
You have done a wonderful job with this campaign Megan.

  4. Well it’s something, anyway. “Small moves, Sparks. Small moves.” From “Contact” which is one of my favorite movies! ;)

  5. lol Marj…we love that movie too.
Thank you women. It is all of us who bought parent and concerned citizen power to bear.
There’s a lesson here – whinge less and act more. From a few people writing blogs to having the company respect teen culture rather than playing with it – a win/win solution for all.

  6. Imagine if…more and more blogs, world wide, taking the side of children as Imaginif.. does…what a wonderful world this will be! Thanks again Megan…and friends. I’m so proud to know you all….
