Community focused child protection is a preventative and enriching activity that all of us can engage daily in. When the term child protection is turned on its head, it simply means, the protection of children.
Many people wrongly suppose that child protection is about catching the baddies that do horrible things to children and having to hear the heart wrenching stories from children about what adults did to them. Statutory child protection may be like that but community focused child protection is about all the things you do, without thinking, that keep your children protected and secure.
Every time you put shoes on your child, every time you place a hat on their head when outside in the sun, each time you provide a balanced and healthy meal, you are doing community focused child protection.
After fifteen years of working in the sexual assault child protection field I was deficit focused. If I didn’t see or hear a horrendous story of child abuse I thought I hadn’t worked hard enough! The deficits trapped inside my head robbed me on energy of passion and of desire to continue to protect children. I knew I was in danger of major burn out.
Taking steps to change my thinking, I began to practice prosperity abundance. Rather than continuing to see deficits I began to notice and celebrate the abundance of people doing things to support and protect children. I began to notice the amount of parents who didn’t harm their children and who understood the difference between growth stimulated play and unstructured play because, “Mummy wants to do something else.”
I was pleasantly surprised with the prosperous nature of community focused child protection and the way it came so easily to many parents…without even realising they were protecting children. I decided to make a daily habit of doing a community child protection audit. Now, rather than seeing deficits and child harm, I surround myself with the prosperity abundance of child protection.
Thank you to all of those parents out there who strive to give their children a wonderful and safe life. I love the way you play, talk, hold hands, laugh, push the swings, gently remind about hats and shoes, supervise beside the pond without damaging natural curiosity and take a keen interest in capitalising upon every teachable moment that crosses your path. I am grateful that I have begun to re-notice how committed our communities are toward protecting our most valuable resource: children.

What does it take to be a leader? Quick, tell me five attributes! I can hear my past university students groaning. They all heard a million times in lectures and tutorials that part of the definition of being a professional is having the ability to clearly articulate what you do.
If you are a professional leader then you must be able to clearly articulate what you do and what you have that sets you apart: the qualities that you use to lead.
I am a leader. I believe in myself, I can problem solve, I see the bigger picture, I motivate others through encouragement and I tread where others are too scared to go. I see an opportunity and I develop it…not exploit it, but develop it. I look no different to anyone else, have no great sign above my head saying leader, I just act like a leader because I have faith in myself and others.
I also expect leadership in others. I believe in empowerment and I expect people to use the tools and gifts given to them to help themselves and others. This cultivation of leadership shines through in all of my dealings with people. I do not dumb people down because they are less fortunate in education or position than me, nor do I elevate them to leadership positions because they wear expensive clothes and drive a fancy car. I EXPECT leadership in everyone.
In expecting leadership, I get leadership. I am surrounded by people who care about others and help others. This to me is the greatest form of leadership – they lead and change by example. Their deeds and their personal power are contagious and they are happy to pass their contagion to all that they touch.
You are a leader because you are reading this through and reflecting upon it. Like draws like and action draws action (Law of Attraction). In your dealings with others today, take the step, and expect leadership in them too. In cultivating it in others it becomes stronger in you.
If you want to make your feeling of leadership stronger, reflect back on a time in your life when you did have a strong sense of leadership: perhaps you won a prize a school or you achieved something that left you swelling with pride and confidence. Remember that feeling and grow it in your heart – leaders reflect, learn and repeat actions that work. Losers allow life to happen to them without challenging for change and success.
To your success, because you deserve it, you leader you.

The financial cost of child abuse is ten times the financial cost of obesity in Australia.
Child abuse and neglect costs Australians ten times more than obesity, a landmark report has found. The report has also found that the number of cases of abuse in our community may be five times higher than the official figures.
The Cost of Child Abuse in Australia, a joint research report by Access Economics, Australian Childhood Foundation and Child Abuse Prevention Research Australia at Monash University, is the first comprehensive report of its kind in Australia. It found that the real cost of child abuse to the Australian community in 2007 was $10.7 billion, and could be as high as $30.1 billion, including the monetary value of the pain and suffering that they experience.
The figures account for the costs associated with protecting and caring for child victims of abuse, including doctors, nurses, police, social workers, judges, probation officers, teachers and foster carers. It also includes responding to crime associated with child abuse and neglect, additional government expenditure on educational assistance for victims, poorer long-term labour market outcomes and an estimate of the total cost of the pain and suffering experienced by child victims of abuse.
“The cost of child abuse to the Australian community is staggering,” said Dr Joe Tucci, CEO of Australian Childhood Foundation.
“The reality is that we can, and should, be doing more to protect our children. If we can prevent child abuse before it starts, we will be protecting vulnerable children and also reducing the financial burden on the Australian community,” said Dr Tucci.
“This is the first comprehensive, national study of the costs of child abuse and neglect in Australia. It clearly demonstrates the importance of accountability and transparency. To spend so much and know so little defies belief. There also needs to be greater investment in research and evaluation,” said Professor Chris Goddard, Director of Child Abuse Prevention Research Australia at Monash University.
“Official estimates from Government child protection authorities are unreliable because there is no uniform national data collection system,” said Professor Goddard.
While there were 36,000 substantiated reports of child abuse and neglect in Australia in 2007, the report estimates that there are approximately 177,000 children abused or neglected and this figure could be even higher.
“This shows that child abuse is still very much an invisible problem and it is likely that thousands of children are left unprotected from abuse and neglect each year,” said Dr Tucci.
The report also calculated that the cost to the community of the consequences of abuse over the lifetime of children who were abused for the first time in 2007 is approximately $13.7 billion and could be as high as $38.7 billion, including the monetary value of the pain and suffering that they experience.
“The scars of child abuse can stay with victims for their whole lives. If we trace those children who were abused for the first time in 2007 for the rest of their lives, we would see the full extent of its effects,” said Dr Tucci.
“It will have an impact on their physical and mental health, increase their need for educational assistance and put them at higher risk of drug and alcohol problems and crime. It will also lead to emotional trauma. Not only do the children suffer, but the community also pays a high price for these consequences,” said Dr Tucci.
“To put this into perspective, the projected $38.7 billion cost to our community is only for those children abused in 2007 for the first time. When you consider that this sort of figure can be applied for a new group of children experiencing abuse and neglect for the first time in 2008 and so on every year, the financial and social costs to all of us are astronomical,” said Dr Tucci.
“The results of this report highlight the urgent need for a national uniform approach to one of Australia’s most serious – and financially crippling – problems,” said Professor Goddard.
The report coincides with a new national campaign, Stop Child Abuse Now, launched this week by the Australian Childhood Foundation.
“The new campaign features a powerful new television commercial designed to compel Australians into taking action against child abuse. Doing nothing is not an option,” said Dr Tucci.
The campaign directs people to www.stopchildabusenow.com.au where they can learn more about how they can prevent child abuse and better protect children.
The launch of the new report comes a day before World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Wednesday 19 November.

Proactive Parenting Tips for Counteracting the Sexualization of Children and Teenagers
For your young child you can:
Limit exposure to sexual content in media and pop culture:
- Use media rating systems to help you decide what media is and is not okay.
- Work with your children to develop rules and routines about their TV watching and media use.
Keep up with children’s media and popular culture.
- Collect information from the children themselves.
- Make sure you look at the most popular items, at least a couple of times, so you are able to talk with your children about them.
- Learn from and share what you know with the parents of your children’s friends.
- Remember that, beyond media, it’s also important to keep up with the real- life experiences related to sex and sexiness, violence and commercialism that children have in the home, at school, and with friends.
Get beyond just saying “no.”
- When possible, try working out solutions with your children.
- When you do need to set limits or say “no,” try to do it in a constructive way—rather than a punitive way (by using your power over children to get your way).
Establish safe channels of communication with children.
- Let children know its okay to raise any and all issues with you, including sexual issues.
- As you talk to your children, keep in mind that having the right answers and responses is less important than getting used to talking about and sharing information about these issues.
Have meaningful conversations with children about sexual issues.
- Try not to blame children or make them feel guilty or ashamed when they do or say something that seems inappropriate.
- Try to take your child’s point of view and see the world through his or her eyes.
- Don’t always expect to know the perfect response instantly.
- When you respond to your child, take the age, prior experiences, specific needs, and unique concerns of your child into account.
- A good way to respond to an issue your child raises is to try to find out what he knows.
Help children use play and art to meet their needs.
- Try to have open-ended toys and play materials that can be used in many ways rather than highly structured toys (toys that come “with back-stories” like TV or movie-themed action figures or characters) that control children’s play.
- Help your child get beyond narrowly scripted play that is controlled by a TV or movie script, or highly structured play materials.
Reduce gender stereotypes.
- Encourage a broad range of interests and skills in both your girls and your boys.
- Choose toys and play materials that allow for a broad range of play activities instead of narrowly scripting it.
- Encourage girls and boys to find common ground for engaging in meaningful activities with each other, including play.
- Point out examples of males and females who are doing a broad range of activities, not just the limited range that children so often see in the media.
- Help boys and girls find appealing role models that provide alternative images to increasingly influential celebrity culture with its superstar icons
Teach children how to have positive relationships.
- Give your children many direct opportunities to experience positive and caring relationships at home and at school.
- Help children express and receive appropriate positive affection, both physical and otherwise, with appropriate people in their lives.
- Share stories about yourself and experiences you had at ages similar to your child’s age.
Create a give-and-take process for working out problems together.
- Talk about the problem together in a way that helps your child see both sides.
- Try to come up with one or more possible solutions that take into account both of your views.
- After your child has tried out the solution, talk together about how well it worked and decide what changes might be needed to make it work better next time.
Work cooperatively with other adults.
- Talk with other adults in your child’s life about concerns and how you are trying to address them.
- Talk about specific issues that have come up with your child and how you have worked on resolving them.
- Agree on how you’ll deal with TV and other media when your children are at each other’s houses.
Help parents and schools work together.
- Build parent-teacher relationships based on mutual respect and collaboration.
- Share concerns with each other when problems come up in the classroom with individual children or a larger group.
- Work to create a school-wide community that makes dealing with the sexualization of childhood a community-wide affair.
- You can ask your children’s teachers and school to keep parents informed about issues that come up in school related to the sexualized culture and what is being done about them.
